In Cedar, the author tells the story of backwoods gamine Tomboy, one thimble-sized poem at a time. The poems are interwoven with Le Deunff's graphite pencil drawings of woodpiles and walnuts, megaliths and mumbling fire-pit embers. A first edition of 500 signed and numbered copies was published, by Bored Wolves, in November 2012. Cedar was printed on Munken Print Cream 1.8 115 g/m² (cover, endpapers, interior). The feeling of the book is therefore one of fibrous texture throughout. The poems themselves are sometimes quite cold; one shivers. The physical book, on the other hand, is warm to hold and page through, and this is very much on purpose: the cream paper is the thick quilt that a small child burrows beneath during wintertime, or after being told a ghost story. Elsewhere, on the hushed and wordless dust jacket, a pair of foxes rut across cover and spine. An eponymous and secretive hand-whittled toothpick is concealed beneath the foxes. On the back, a diorama poem, hidden as well, overlaps with the book's title. Story therefore ends (or begins, or cyclically continues) on the back cover. The typeface here and on the title page is Avant Garde Gothic, which recalls the runic angularity of letters carved into the bark of a tree with a switchblade. From the author: The physical book itself is designed by Pilar Rojo. Pilar has created a "rucksack hardback"—which is to say a ruggedly compact hardcover (12x17 cm) capable of withstanding a good deal of use and abuse over time. This will be a book to wedge into the bottom of one’s pack and carry along on a mountain journey. The hope is that the book will become more and more beautiful over time, even as its textured cover absorbs soil and sun, and the margins become stained with tree sap and the blood of swatted mosquitoes. Of course, Cedar Toothpick never need leave the safety of armchair nook and bookshelf niche; but know, dear reader, that should you feel the tug of wanderlust, this rucksack hardback is more than happy to double as wayfarer’s companion. The second book in a series edited by Milach, “Private Property” documents and explores, one photographic series at a time, issues of ownership, territoriality, public versus private space, and the degree to which one’s identity can tether itself to even the most marginal-seeming of structures and interiors. The design of the book itself picks up on these themes: each copy of “Private Property” is sealed by a perforated strip of card stock running along its vertical edge; the book is therefore silent and “locked” until its owner removes the strip. Having done so, he or she may then be the first to venture between the volume’s covers. 500 copies of “Private Property” were printed, hand-bound, notched, and manually stamped on the front and back covers in May 2012. A thick red line, reminiscent of the “Do Not Cross” tape used by the police to seal off a house or street corner, is a recurring graphic motif throughout the book.
